We're finally here and there's no turning back now

We finally arrived in Kona Island today.

And thus the start of a new adventure for our family.

We left Oakland International airport at 7:45am and arrived in sunny hot Kona Island (Hawaii Big Island) at 10:05am local time.
The air we breathed straight out of the plane was humid and hot compared to the bay area.

When we got to the University of Nations, we were welcomed by the warm staff members of the University of Nations.
Jiseong and Jiyeon were irratated by the end of our 2 hour registration process.
The school is receiving more than 300 students this semester, and our GO Asia! DTS mission is the largest of all the schools.
(although the focus is Asia, we'll be going to only China) Two areas we're certian to go is Dalian and Dandong. We'll know the rest of the ministries we'll be visiting during the course of our school and outreach preparation.

It was a tiring day, exhausted, but we were filled with joy, and relieve that we're finally here, and there's no turning back now.
Onward one step at a time. Like Jiseong's picture below. walking in confidence.

It's no coincidence i'm Korean-American, Going to China, and from the IT industry

I met with a former YWAMer, Betty Young a few days ago.

Living in Silicon Valley, i wanted to network with her and learn about her ministry. She's orchestrating the 1040 movie, a Christian Documentary about the emerging GenerAsian. And she also connected me to Deoworks, a Christian startup, which  builds Internet tools to connect the body of Christ & establish and accelerate the work of the Kingdom.

One thing that stuck in my head while we were talking that i'll never forget.

"It's no coincidence you're Korean-American, going to China, and from the IT industry. God is using Koreans in China, and is using the new technology platform to spread the Word of God"

l get the chills again... clearly God is leading me this way.

Dollars from heaven. God is sending me, not me.

When money drops from heaven, when you need it the most, you lose any doubt about how God is leading you. Now you know it's God who is leading you every step of the way. All you have to do is follow and take one step at a time. And when you do, one of those steps will open the red sea, like it did for Moses.

On my last day of Uncover Your Calling, at the end of the session, one of my group members came to me with a check! Earlier that day she felt
that God wanted her to give money to someone today, and it wasn't one person but 2. So she obeyed and brought two checks. During our final group session having each person in our group talk about what they will be doing after "UYC" there was exactly two people, myself and another woman who talked about mission and that they were fund-raising. Imagine the surprise my supporter had when she heard this!

She shared with me a story that stuck with me all night. Years ago God had given her a heart to  give money to  help her children go to mission work. and she didn't tell her husband until after she gave the check. Her husband was furious!, and it would take a few days for the check to clear, but they didn't have enough money in the bank.  The next day her husband came home from his business, with a contract statement that was 100 times the amount she had given! and what's more surprising was that the money had to be given ASAP before the check cleared.

It made me think of this verse. Matthew 6:33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

As i go to YWAM in faith, i seek the kingdom of God first, and he is providing for me. Other incidents like this have happened. People from church, people i know out of the blue are supporting me. None as dramatic as the one above, but none are without God's grace. I'm still short, but isn't it supposed to be fun? Experiencing God leading every step of the way.

A letter from God

For the past 9 weeks, i've participated in a "Uncover your callingcourse at the Career Actions Ministry supported by the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. The Course helps you work through barriers and identify transferable skills, gifts, and compelling interests.

Today was the last day, and our final assignment today was to write a letter to myself from God.

Here's what i wrote.

A letter from God

Richard,
I love you, I love you more than you will ever know. I will be with you always. You are so precious to me that i will put you up high so that my glory may be seen.
Troubled waters you will meet. Through your hardships, through what you think are failures will be my miracles to bring you, and everyone around you closer to me. The one who loves you. And I await silently feeding you without asking in return.

God.

Letting go

Our place is a mess with all the packing. we have less than 3 weeks before we go and we're packing our belongings to put in storage and minimizing our luggage to bring to outreach, so just the basics in China.

As we're going through our things, deciding what to put in storage, what to take to outreach, or throw it away (or give away), all of the sudden we're overwhelmed with this sadness of letting go.  It feels like God is making us practice laying down our most precious possessions.
Old artwork Jiyeon and Jiseong drew when they were toddlers, possessions that don't have much functional value but we've grown attached to, clothes and accessories we thought could make us look more "prestigious". It's been an awaking experience, making us focusing on what is most important, what is eternal. Even Jiseong and Jiyeon have to let go. no more nintendo, no more DVDs

A good friend once told me recently that she knew a prestigious doctor, who earned enough money to live a life of luxury. A nice house, an expensive car, etc. and he sold it all, and moved into a small apartment, and exchanged his car for a tiny one. And donated his money to missions and started his own family-centered ministry (가정사역). People asked him, how could you do it? live so humbly when you are a well known doctor?
What would people think of you? You're a doctor for Christ's sake!

"I can do it because i don't have inferiority complex (열등감이 없어서)"  God loves me so much, he thinks of me as someone so precious! I don't need to package myself with a nice car, a luxury watch or a big house. I have God's love.

We can let go of so many things when we know we are loved. God's love is the best.

It's official! we've been accepted, but we already knew that

Although I knew God was calling our family to come to the Go Asia DTS, it isn't actually official until we get accepted by the school. We were preparing in faith, purchasing the plane tickets, and packing our things to put in storage. Well we finally got word and here's the official letter we got.

Dear Richard & Jungrim

A word about Jiseong

The children apply to the Foundation School at the University of Nations as well. And just like the adults, they need reference forms too. Here's what Jiseong's (5, Kinder) Sunday school teacher had to say about him on his reference form to YWAM.

I have taught Jiseong for about 3 years in both sunday school and Awana. Jiseong is respectful during worship and he has a lot  of leadership in class. For example, during the Christmas play, Jiseong played the lead angel Gabriel, and not only did he set a good example for the other angels to follow, he also had the confidence to belt out his lines on stage. Due to his excellent performance, the Christmas play was a success. Jiseong has alot of spunk and gets long very well with other children. He is also very polite, obedient to elders, great with following directions and is good as taking care of other children.
